Quad Bikes and Their History

Last updated 5 months ago

Quad bikes may seem like a simple notion – in some respects being nothing more than a four-wheeled motorcycle. However, the history of quad bikes is notably different to that of other types of bikes, with the vehicles originally being developed as far back as the late 19th century for use as transport carriages.

Creation and development

Royal Enfield is credited with producing the first quad bikes in 1893, which utilised bicycle components for lack of motorcycle equipment, but otherwise bore striking visual similarity to modern ATVs. However, sporting and recreational quad bikes did not emerge until the 1970s, when Honda produced models based on its own motorcycle lines.

The term "ATV" was originally coined to refer to non-straddle ridden six-wheeled amphibious ATVs such as the Jiger. With the introduction of straddle ridden ATVs, the term AATV was introduced to define the original amphibious ATV category.

In the1980s, Suzuki introduced concepts such as the odometer and five speeds, and quad bikes became increasingly more versatile in the decades that followed. This was also the period during which factors were established for quad bike classification, with eligible vehicles having three cc criteria and two stroke engines.

Different types of quad bikes

Today, people looking for quad bikes have a wide range of options, from sports and utility quads to road legal vehicles and more resilient models suited to extreme terrain. With quad bikes being popular among people of all ages, manufacturers have also developed a number of child-friendly models, which offer a safer option for younger riders.
